This is the ASIC and SoC Insider, inside the interview, episode 13, the C-Suit question, how do you align engineering with business goals? This is a defining question for directors, VPs, or C-Suite candidates. It’s about whether you can connect technical excellence with business value.
Strong leaders aren’t just technically sharp. They show they can align resources, risk, and innovation with market and revenue goals. So when you’re posed with the question, how do you align engineering execution with business strategy. Example answer could be I start with strategy. What is the business objective?
Is it the first to market high performance, or low cost? Then I align engineering trade offs with that goal, for example, in a networking SOC project business, the business wanted me to hit a nine month tape out to secure design wins that meant verification needed to be risk-based, focused on high impact blocks like pocket processing and PCI interfaces.
While using proven IP for less critical paths, I communicated those trade offs to the executives and engineers alike, ensuring alignment from top to bottom. The result we taped out on time met market needs and minimized risk at senior levels. Your answers must bridge the gap between engineering rigor, and business outcomes.
