Principal Verification Engineer (Embedded / RTOS / Safety-Critical) – Bristol (Hybrid) – Up to £75,000 + benefits
My client’s engineering team is looking to add a Principal Verification Engineer to support the development of safety-critical embedded systems across automotive and medical applications.
This role is focused on strengthening verification capability within a SAFERTOS / RTOS environment, with a clear objective of developing the successful candidate into a Team Leadership position within 12 months.
You will operate at the intersection of embedded software, real-time systems, and functional safety, working closely with engineering teams to ensure robust, compliant, and high-quality system delivery.
Principal Verification Engineer – Role & Responsibilities:
- Lead verification and validation activities across embedded / RTOS-based systems
- Work within a SAFERTOS environment, ensuring system robustness and reliability
- Support development aligned to functional safety standards including ISO 26262 and IEC 61508
- Collaborate with software, systems, and architecture teams to ensure full system integrity
- Contribute to test strategy, coverage, and verification methodologies
- Mentor and support junior engineers within the team
- Drive quality, compliance, and best practice in safety-critical software development
- Support progression into a future Team Leadership role
Principal Verification Engineer – Essential Skills:
- Strong experience in embedded software / systems engineering (C / RTOS)
- Background in verification, validation, or testing of complex systems
- Experience working within safety-critical environments (automotive or medical preferred)
- Familiarity with ISO 26262 and/or IEC 61508
- Experience mentoring, coaching, or providing technical leadership to engineers
- Strong understanding of real-time systems and embedded architectures
- Ability to work across cross-functional engineering teams
- Clear communication skills, both technical and non-technical
What this isn’t:
- Not a pure design / RTL development role
- Not a purely theoretical or research-led position
- Not a people management role from day one — leadership is a structured progression
- Not an aerospace / DO-178 focused environment
